This work aims to deepen the available knowledge related to the territorial deployment projects of the National State over the Chaco, during the period of the Argentine Confederation (1852-1861). Based on the particular career of Alfredo Marbais Du Graty, a government official and military figure during the government of Justo José de Urquiza, we will identify the specific projects related to the occupation and delimitation of the Chaco region, and how these projects, promoted by the national government, generated conflicts with the different provincial administrations. We will inquire on the limitations of the discursive incorporation strategies of the space within the framework of the new military deployment in the Chaco, starting in 1858. Our analysis will cover, as well, the shape that interethnic politics took from this period onwards.
