The history of Spanish translations of Shakespeare’s works is increasingly attracting the attention of Shakespearean scholars. This article offers a brief historical overview and proposes that, in addition to placing the translations and the reflections of translators in a European context, it is important to consider them in a transatlantic context as well, since this wider context shaped the circulation of Shakespeare’s works in Spanish from the time of the first translations. At the end of the article appears a bibliographic appendix with a survey of Spanish translations of Shakespeare’s poetry. This is an area in which translation has been particularly active in recent times and whose study is being approached from new perspectives.
