The article proposes a perspective of the differentiation of the modern economic sphere based on Simmel´s theory of monetary exchange. In this way, in contrast with Schimank´s point of view, I maintain that the thesis of the inversion of means and ends is not the most fertile approach, in conceptual terms, to focus on the problem of the autonomization of the economy, since it supposes a psychologism. On the contrary, I state that this topic should be examined within the framework of the relations from which the economic value emerges, namely: between subject and object, between subjects and between objects. Having done this, I show that, just as there is no subjectivist bias in the Simmelian perspective of economic value, neither does it fall into objectivism: the German theorist shows a series of meanings that subjects can attribute to money in capitalism. Thus, I propose an alternative interpretation of Simmel to that of Zelizer. Then I maintain that although Simmel does not specify which are the values of the different modern spheres, he does draw a boundary between the economy and its exterior, a boundary that can be conceptualized as a porous and dynamic boundary between the monetary value and the human value, that is, between price and dignity.
