Taking into account that some authors support the distinction between quantitative and qualitative research perspectives, this work presents their underlying epistemologies, and the relation between them. Also, the positions that propose that there are no epistemological differences in both methodological approaches are taken into account. Quantitative research methodology is based on positivism and postpositivism theories. On the other band, qualitative perspective is based on phenomenology, symbolic interactionism, critical sociology and hermeneutics. So, considering that for some authors quantitative and qualitative perspectives have different epistemological grounds having, therefore, different characteristics, their particular aspects are described. Finally, the issue whether these theories are immeasurable is discussed.
