In this paper, I explore –from a theoretical perspective– the possibility of understanding the Siete Partidas’ legal discourse as a self-reflexive one. The key point is that the writing of the law in the thirteenth century Castilian foresees a thorough theory that entails at the same time the necessity of law and the existence of the non-legal as constitutive reference. However, this non-legal element does not imply it as an external agent for the instituting action, but as a component of the concept of unity that is associated with its own reality. In this sense, I intend to carry out a narratological analysis of the laws in order to understand how the inside and the outside of Alfonso X’s laws are constructed within its discourse.
