This article presents a comparative study of the results obtained by the implementation of different alternatives of a beam model for the analysis of structures undergoing large deflections and rotations. The model consists in a beam finite element formulation based on Timoshenko’s theory that includes consistently Von Kármán’s geometric non-linearities. In order to solve the governing equations of the structure, two kinematic descriptions are harnessed: the first one considering an absolute referen- ce frame and the second one considering a co-rotational one. The study addresses static problems and analyses the applicability and convergence speed of each description. Finally, since the findings are in agreement with those published in the literature, general guidelines are established regarding the perfor- mance of the model.
