In this paper we analyze the reception of Kierkegaard by Franco Lombardi in the philosophical and political framework of post war Italy, in which context it is the simultaneous reflection of two issues. On the one hand, it highlights the political character that the dispute over Hegelian idealism assumed (the latter had been used by Croce to oppose the positivism, which was in general close to socialism). On the other hand, in the narrower field of Kierkegaard studies, the reading undertaken by the future socialist, Lombardi, opposes that of the Catholic translator Fabro, who he dismisses for locating himself within the position of the “Kierkegaard renaissance”. Ultimately, what is at stake in the dispute between Lombardi and Fabro are not only the terms in which the respective receptions are structured, but the ideological opposition between socialism and Catholicism, which Gramsci had already accounted for in his early writings.
