Yerba mate has great commercial and cultural importance in Paraguay; its leaves are consumed as part of a traditional drink called mate as a hot infusion, or tereré as a cold infusion. This plant is attacked by several species of insects and its control is generally carried out with biocides. However, in organic yerba mate plantations these substances are not allowed due to quality and export regulations. The Beauveria fungus is entomopathogenic and is capable of attacking one of the main pests of the yerba mate, Gyropsylla spegazziniana, which causes blisters or curling in the leaves with great negative economic consequences. Entomopathogenic fungican be used within biological control programmes considering that they attack insects causing their death. Therefore, it is intended to search for microorganisms and evaluate their bioprospecting in order to use them in biotechnological lines that providebenefits in agricultural and industrial economic activities. The present work reports the isolation, identification, and conservation of fungal strains of the genus Beauveria which is native from Paraguay, as a starting material to evaluate the potentiality of its application in biocontrol processes of G. spegazziniana.
