This study constitutes a synthesis of interdisciplinary investigations in progress on the comparative trajectories of the lineages of the Maycá and Catriel chieftains since their incorporation into the policy of the “peaceful business of Indians” in the decades of 1820 and 1830 until the unification of the State in 1862. We focus on the urban and rural settlement patterns and the changes that have taken place in indigenous territoriality due to their relation to the State and Creole society on the southern frontier of Buenos Aires. In this sense, we attend to the indigenous agency, the provision of armed service, and the role of institutions and intermediate agents within the Buenos Aires frontier context. The diversity of forms of access to land and property rights stands out, especially during the “legal order” period of the post-Caseros liberal court and the projection of these processes of nineteenth-century roots to the present day.
