This work represents a starting point for questioning the role of color in the communication strategies and other aspects of the hunter-gatherer groups of central-western Santa Cruz (Argentina). Based on the analysis of published and unpublished research produced by the authors' research team, an initial systematization of the findings of portable objects with coloring substances and pigment samples from archaeological sites in the region is carried out. In this way, a database is created through which a first general characterization of these materials on different supports and contexts is achieved. The spatial and temporal distribution of these materials is evaluated and then compared with that of rock paintings previously described in other studies. It is concluded that the analyzed evidence is widely distributed in the study region, associated with various types of sites and primarily late chronologies, and that most of them would not be directly linked to the locations of the rock paintings. Thus, this work aims to initiate a systematic approach to the study of color and highlight the relevance of its study in order to complement and deepen discussions about the circulation of information constructed from the study of rock art representations.
