The aim of this study is to reconstruct the theoretical positions surrounding the debate on the rationality (and irrationality) of animals in Philo of Alexandria’s De animalibus. To this end, we divide the work into two parts. The first focuses on investigating Alexander’s arguments regarding his conception of animal λόγος. The second part examines Philo’s position on the relationship between animate beings and humans. In both parts, we connect the discourses of the interlocutors using Platonic, Aristotelian, and Stoic terminology. We conclude that the ultimate purpose of the debate is to prove the possible existence, or lack thereof, of a principle of equality between animals and humans.
