Resumen

During parts of the 1980s and 1990s, the team led by Dr. Héctor M. Pucciarelli, a distinguished Argentine biological anthropologist, carried out a series of experiments in which he modeled the effect of protein restriction on postnatal development. For this purpose, he used primates of the species Saimiri boliviensis. Since the 1950s, the field of biological anthropology had proposed the incorporation of an experimental perspective to address issues related to human biological development. Influenced by these ideas, Dr. Pucciarelli conducted this work, which resulted in a unique and original body of publications. The skulls derived from these experiments constitute the subject of the database shared here. We undertook the scanning of this material using micro-computed tomography technology in order to obtain high-resolution images. The resulting image stacks derived from this acquisition are provided here together with information on experimental groups. While it would be neither feasible nor ethically desirable to replicate those experiments under current standards, the material resulting from that work can still be meaningfully utilized without causing harm, thereby allowing continued scientific value to be drawn from the original experiments.

Métodos

The dataset consists of 36 male and 4 female squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) skulls from individuals aged between 9 and 36 months. All monkeys were born in captivity at CAPRIM (Centro Argentino de Primates) and experiments were conducted in the Medicine School and Veterinary School of the National University of La Plata (Argentina). Skulls were recovered from different malnutrition experiments that studied the effects of a protein-deficient diet on craniofacial growth. All individuals were fed ad-libitum, either with a standard 20% protein content diet for control groups (Co) or diets with lower percentages of protein (low-protein, LP) for the treatment groups, during an interval that varied across experiments. For the analyses reported here, individuals from the three experimental settings were grouped into four categories: (1) adult control (Co), comprising animals aged 24–36 months fed a control standard diet; (2) juvenile control (Juv-Co), including 9-month-old specimens; (3) extreme low-protein diet (Ext-LP), consisting of adult animals (30 months of age) exposed for an extended (starting at 6 months of postnatal life) period to a 5% protein diet; and (4) low-protein diet (LP), including animals aged 15–36 months fed a diet containing 10% protein from 12 months of postnatal life onward.

Información Técnica

How to extract the .7z files Install 7-Zip: https://www.7-zip.org/ Download all parts of the archive into the same folder. Example: dataset.7z.001 dataset.7z.002 dataset.7z.003 Right-click the first file only: dataset.7z.001 Select: 7-Zip → “Extract Here” or 7-Zip → “Extract to folder_name” 7-Zip will automatically combine and extract all parts. Important: Do not rename the files. All parts must be present in the same folder before extraction.
