In this paper we present the ongoing archaeological research of the Cepeda (1859) and Pavón (1861) battlefields, clashes in which the leadership of the process of construction of the emerging Argentine national state was fought for and settled. After discussing the specificities and challenges that archaeology faces when studying Argentine nineteenth century battlefields, we present the research lines that guide our approach to these case studies, the archaeological finds and the interpretive inferences built upon them, highlighting similarities and differences between the two cases, as well as pointing out the potential the archaeological approach has for the construction of original narratives about momentous historical events.
