In Colombian secondary school programs, the implementation of neoliberal educational policies since the 1980s has promoted competition and entrepreneurship at school. Thus, in this article we inquire the perspectives on these notions of students from two public secondary school institutions in different locations and with different socioeconomic levels of families in the metropolitan area of Medellín (Sabaneta-Antioquia). For this purpose, results from a survey carried out in both schools during 2021 and 2022 are taken into account; in this survey, students report, with differences between one institution and another, the importance of school for work, its productivity and economic valuation, as well as their relationship with what makes them more competitive, individualistic, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and flexible. At the same time, they establish a differentiated assessment scale considering the knowledge transmitted by the school and notions such as effort and meritocracy, while they would prefer not to be in situations of permanent competition, since they associate this with exhaustion and tiredness.
