In the Middle Ages, the animalization was one of the strategies adopted by the ecclesiastical intellectuals with the aim of granting argumentative substance to the antiheretic discursives. In fact, animals – especially, foxes and wolves- were implemented in consolidating the position of orthodoxy by articulating and projecting their images and representations about heresy, which -in turn- possessed a performative power that imposed an identity over the dissidents. Appropriating their image and attributing to their behavior a series of moral values, representations orbiting around animals became a sort of material subject to the manipulation of a series of discursive practices with the objective of associating heretics and animals under the sign of behavior and bestial attitudes. These discursive constructions supported an agonistic rhetoric that legitimized the suppression of religious dissidence.
