Immediately after being consecrated bishop in 1895, Juan Sinforiano Bogarín began his pastoral visit to the diocese, which lasted until 1898. This type of general visit had not been carried out for more than a century. Unlike the pastoral visits carried out by the Argentine and Brazilian bishops, Monsignor Bogarín’s was not accompanied by a prior mission in the communities; it was eminently sacramental in practice, although it had the intention of rebuilding the religious and ecclesial framework of Paraguay. The local church had gone through an institutional crisis after the war against the triple alliance, and although with the papal envoy Monsignor Di Pietro a process of consolidation had begun from above, it was still necessary to reach the bases. The documentation used is fundamentally the Book of Pastoral Visits found in the Archive of the Archdiocese of Asunción.
