This work explores the social construction of knowledge around the use of native medicinal plants. The different forms of knowledge that come into dispute, the various meanings attributed to these plants and the actors involved are analyzed. In particular, we describe the case of paico (Chenopodium spp.), especially the varieties present in the Patagonia Argentina Chenopodium Multifidum L. and Chenopodium Ambrosioides L. This plant is used by inhabitants of towns in the region, and is part of their usual custom to relieve stomach aches and indigestion. This medicinal meaning given by generations of local people opposes the resolutions of an institutionalized expertise that determines the not-use of the plant. Indeed, according to the National Institute of Drugs (INAME) - ANMAT (Argentinean national regulatory organism, which is in charge of the analysis of substances comprising essential oils of plants), it is a toxic species. Thus, based in chemical analysis of paico's essential oil, the agency sets plant toxicity for human consumption. The two opposite meanings given to paico, as a medicine or as a toxic, are the result of two types of knowledge that mark a conflict scenario: expert knowledge and traditional knowledge.
