The archival turn for several decades has proposed new sensibilities with respect to the conceptualizations of the notions of archives and transformed their practices and uses. In this framework and understanding archives as historical-political agents that express power relations, this paper proposes to investigate the gestures of montage in the reactivations, re-readings and creation of archives of the Portuguese colonial period in Africa in the films Visões do Imperio (2020), directed by Joana Pontes, Fantasmas do Imperio (2020) by Ariel de Bigault, the Angolan film Independência (2015) by Fradique (Mário Bastos) and the Angolan short film Mulheres de Armas (2012) by Kamy Lara. The four films seek to dwell on the marks of absences, on the colonial violence expressed by the muted traces of documents and images. They reactivate a zombie function of the archive that returns to enunciate the lack and forge and give rise to alternative and counter-hegemonic memories.
