Leopoldo Suárez played a prominent role in the provincial government of Mendoza during the period of Radicalismo Lencinista (1918-1928). An expert in viticulture –having specialized in Italy and served as director of the National School of Viticulture in Mendoza–, he acted as an advisor on public policy design and later held various positions: Superintendent of Irrigation, Minister of Industries and Public Works, Senator and Comptroller of the General Directorate of Schools. Suárez’s assignment to head the educational department was due to his proven ability to resolve conflicts. However, he did not only address the urgent problem of delayed teachers payments, he also conducted a thorough diagnosis of the area and devised a reform plan to promote comprehensive improvement. This process involved visits to educational establishments and the implementation of substantial changes. His efforts contributed to the regulation of the teaching profession, the introduction of New School educational practices in the province and the construction of modern public schools distributed across the territory. Suárez’s work in the General Directorate of Schools is recognized as a milestone achievement in Mendoza’s education history, driving a comprehensive reform. This study examines his work and its impact on the modernization process of the provincial educational system.
