In this work we address three stories by Samanta Schweblin (2017) published in Pájaros en la boca: “La furia de las pestes”, “Bajo tierra” y “En la estepa”. In our view, they are stories that allow us to wonder about non-human agentivity and the constitutively semiotic nature of other living beings (Kohn, 2021 and Viveiros de Castro, 2010). We propose to problematize the way in which these texts produce encounters between human and non-human forces that blur the boundaries between nature and culture and allow us to think about new ways of reading the supernatural. We approach this notion from Viveiros de Castro (2013) and Valentim (2018), who understand the supernatural as a properly political experience of the combat between points of view, in which power relations come into play. Thus, the category of supernatural enables us to read outside the fantastic fictional worlds whose elements are interwoven in processes of constant semiosis that disarticulate the distinctions between nature/culture, human/non-human. We consider that Schweblin's stories construct imaginations around the supernatural that allow us to denaturalize and reconfigure these dichotomies and thus rethink our practices and ways of reading. At this point, we wonder about the procedures through which literature is constituted as a privileged place to make (other) worlds.
