This article systematizes a series of reflections on the conceptualization of the capitalist state and imperialism within the framework of the international system of states. Without attempting to review more than a century of discussions within Marxism on this matter, we focus our approach on two axes. First, we frame our hypotheses in the debates on the conceptualization of the capitalist state and its relationship with the bourgeoisie as the ruling class. Then, we examine the conceptualization of "the international", focusing our approach on understanding imperialism and unequal and combined development as two facets of the same process of domination and accumulation, of expansion of capital and subjection of labor.
