Subsequently, I return to Abdelmalek Sayad’s legacy to explain the starting points of my arguments: the intrinsic links between migration order and national order, and the consequent illegitimacy and provisionality of the immigrant presence. In the following sections I show the connections between the gradual politicization of migrant’s family life in the European context; the gender, race, class and sexual politics that form what Eric Fassin calls the imperialism of sexual democracy and the changing substances of national identities.
