Infectious diseases caused by various microbial pathogens affect a large number of people each year. These rapidly spreading microbial diseases are a major problem in various areas of health, which is increased by the antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobials available are not completely effective, limiting their application in clinical environment. Antimicrobials of natural origin derived from plants and other sources are currently being studied. It has been shown that these compounds used individually or in combination with traditional antimicrobials could be effective against a variety of pathogenic microorganisms, including those resistant to multiple drugs. In this article, we provide a review of the progress made in this topic by the Natural Products and Galenic Development group of the National University of Austral Chaco working with plant species from northeastern Argentina.
