The paradoxical fertility through which nature can become lavish, provided the disappearance of the human factor—such as in exclusion zones due to radioactive contamination in Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011)—raises the question of how such landscapes are depicted in our visual culture. Identifying analogous forms from the 19th century onward, where vegetal transformation signals a past or future cataclysm for humanity, leads to the acknowledgment of an innovative corpus of art literature, reminiscent of the Kunstliteratur that Julius von Schlosser devoted his monumental book Die Kunstliteratur to in 1924. Reconstructing and contemplating this corpus within a musée imaginaire where landscapes unfold through the narratives of some authors as forgotten, abandoned, and ruined gardens, compels us to transcend the usual categories in the aesthetic appreciation of nature. At the border between language and images, these landscapes of devastation find their best interpretative framework at the crossroads of natural history, human history and art history. This assigns a particular significance to the epistemic-aesthetic system of ideas of Naturphilosophie, which will be considered here.
