The aim of this paper is to analyse a travel chronicle written by José Ingenieros in 1905, when he was visiting Madrid. Its topic is a bull fight and it is organized according to two aspects. The first is aesthetic and it connects Ingenieros to other authors belonging to the romanticism, the parnasianism or the modernism, like Gautier, Darío and Manuel Machado. The second is scientificist: the chronicle author understands the spanish bull fights as a symptom of cultural and racial decadence. This interpretation is possible because Ingenieros shares the biologicist language and knew the theories about the degeneration disseminated in Latin America around the 1900, thanks to the positivism.
