In this study, we analyze the economic strategies and risk management implemented by the human groups that inhabited the Valle de Iglesia (San Juan, Argentina) over the last 2000 years. Using archaeofaunal collections, we apply osteometric and isotopic analyses to camelid bone remains and identify the development of economic practices that combined hunting and herding, in addition to agriculture. The results highlight the importance of both wild and domestic camelids in the human diet, as well as their role in social interaction networks. The study emphasizes the diversity of adaptive strategies in an arid and variable environment, including transhumance, the management of wild and domestic resources (animals and plants), and the use of agricultural technologies. This research contributes to the understanding of socio-environmental dynamics and resource management in unpredictable environments and raises the need for further investigation into the presence of domestic camelids such as the alpaca.
