The main focus of this article is the living and working conditions of the tareferos, or yerba mate harvesters, in the province of Misiones. The chosen period spans from 1910, marking the onset of yerba mate plantation production, to the 1970s, coinciding with the emergence of the first socio-historical studies of the agrarian sector. After a brief historiographical analysis of yerba mate production, the text explores the characteristics of harvesting in natural yerba mate fields and the changes brought about by the introduction of cultivated fields. It also examines the genesis of the initial segment of the agrarian working class and, finally, discusses labor conditions, worker mobility, and gendered activity by 1970.
