This paper reflects on testimonies of state terrorism and the conditions that make them possible. Drawing on both research experience and educational engagement with these topics, it explores how societies–and the various spheres within them–enable or constrain the possibility for survivors to narrate their experiences. As a case study, it examines how testimonies of sexual violence in clandestine detention centers in Argentina have been received in different social contexts over time. Through this analysis, the paper develops the concept of “social frameworks of listening,” discussing what we mean by this notion and how these frameworks evolve historically.
