The antecedents of the Jesuit province of Paraguay are confined first as mission territory since 1585 and then as a vice province dependent on the province of Peru in 1603. Few authors warned about the events that followed when this vice province was created, while some others they do not even register it, being nothing less than the immediate predecessor of the province of Paraguay. Although it had an ephemeral duration, it was constituted after a solid missionary experience and the actions undertaken at that time filled an important space in the history of the region. Above all, the figure of the viceprovincial, the ascetic-mystic Diego Álvarez de Paz stands out. It was the time of full formation of several residences, operational bases for the expansion of pastoral work between Spaniards and mainly indigenous.
