This article explores the different variations of the connection between gender and reading in Stella. Novela de costumbres argentinas (1905), the first novel written by Argentinean writer Emma de la Barra (1861-1947). In particular, the paper analyses the readings of its protagonist, Alejandra Fussler, who is described in the novel as an atypical reader, whose relationship with her body is shaped by her reading practices. In this regard, I suggest that her readings function as gender technologies (De Lauretis 1996) that affect her corporality and behavior. Also, I intend that Stella presents new representations of the female reader and that the novel proposes an alternative femineity model for the women of the time. In addition, this article aims to relate those representations with the authorial fiction (Premat 2008) that derives from some texts that De la Barra published in the periodic press in 1906 and 1908.
