Resumen

Blooms of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa are common in many eutrophic freshwater bodies and pose a serious threat to water quality, potentially giving rise to high turbidity, food web alterations, increased production of toxic microcystin (MCs) and odorous compounds. For its removal, different doses of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2- 50-150 mg.L-1) were used to a culture of M. aeruginosa and the degradation of chlorophyll-a (Clo-a) and the loss of cell viability were evaluated using different mathematical models The degradation of Clo-a was satisfactorily evaluated by first order kinetics. The Weibull model allowed predicting the exposure time to achieve a 99.9% reduction in viable cells. H2O2 was effective in reducing the viability of M. aeruginosa, degrading Clo-a and MCs in culture medium. The polynomial model allowed calculating the number of viable cells from the determination of Clo-a.
