The film El último centauro (Enrique Queirolo, 1924) refreshes the figure of the rebel gaucho in the context of a crisis of the liberal order determined by the clash of different criteria of legitimacy supported by the displaced old elite and the Radical group recently arrived to the government. In this setting, this article explores the process of Martinfierrisation of Moreira through which the film encloses the main character within an epic aura so as to to comply with the canonisation of the gaucho as a national symbol in the years of the Centenary. In order to examine this mutual assimilation of the two most famous gauchos in Argentine culture, we will emphasize on the figure of Elías Regules because he is quoted in the film and because he wrote the first theatrical adaptation of Martín Fierro, a play that reinterpreted the character under the light of the circus versions of Moreira performed by the Podestá brothers, with whom Queirolo might have been connected.
