The objective of this study was to identified and characterize wet and drought periods in the andean and extra andean regions of the Senguer river basin located in the Argentinean Patagonia. The effects of those events over the fluctuations in the depth of the Musters lake was also studied. The lake is localized in the lower basin, thus changes in its depth reflects hydrological changes produces by drought and humid events in both andean and extra andean region. The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was analized to identify wet and drought periods. Monthly time series (1998-2015; 216 months) of the SPEI 3M in a station located in the andean sector (C.Sup.), another station in the extra andean sector (C.Inf.) and the Musters lake depth were analyzed. The correlation and phase shift between the time serie of the SPEI 3M of each station and the variations in the depth of the lake was calculated. The percentage of drought months (C.Inf = 38%; C.Sup = 36%) were higher than humid months (C.Inf = 29%; C.Sup = 15%) for both station. During the same period, lake depth decreased -0.7m. Cross-spectra showed high squared coherence (>0.83) over annual period between lake depth and the SPEI 3M of both stations. A drought or humid periods in the andean region and the extra andean region takes three month and half a month, respectively, to produce changes in the lake depth. Keywords: Drought and wet periods; SPEI; Lake depth; Argentinean Patagonia; Andean and extra andean region.
