Numerous outcrops of basic and acidic volcanic rocks from Argentina are used as a source of concrete aggregates. Although their physical-mechanical properties make them suitable for use as aggregates, they may contain potentially reactive materials sensitive to the alkali-silica reaction due to their volcanic nature. The textural or mineralogical variation, mineral composition and paragenesis, as well as the secondary minerals, are essential factors to be evaluated in order to predict the aggregate behaviour in construction. Most of the rocks studied are potentially reactive from a petrographic point of view, due to the presence in the groundmass of fresh or partially devitrified glass, clays and amorphous silica. The basalts show variable reactivity, ranging from zero to extremely reactive, while the rhyolites show moderate reactivity. In addition, in order to evaluate their behaviour in mortar and/or concrete, data were collected from standardized physical tests and bibliographies belonging to the same samples studied.
