Primatology is a very broad discipline whose subject boundaries are still under discussion. To define the identity of Primatology in Argentina in a Latin American context, it is necessary to determine which factors shaped its profile. In this paper we analyze some formal and conceptual aspects that help to consolidate primatological research in our country. As general conclusions we emphasize, first, that the Primatology in Argentina was born as a branch of Biology and, only recently, converged toward the Anthropology field where it formally lies. Second, Argentinian Primatology assumed a descriptive bias around the observed variation in Neotropical primates. The lack of evolutionary approaches to understand the local primate phenomenon allows us to propose new insights for our future projects. It is necessary to develop theoretical aspects to understand the available descriptive results in a unique, historical perspective that enable us to rethink neglected topics linked to systematic, diversity and evolutionary issues that shaped the biology of this group of primates.
