It is important to consider the complexity of the concept of environmentally conscious design, him process and optimization. A comprehensive study requires knowledge that has a certain learning time mainly because of the diversity of aspects involved relevant to different disciplinary fields (climate characterization, morphological and space constraints, energy resources, thermodynamics, and hygrothermal behavior modeling of buildings, materials characteristics, microeconomics, numerical simulation, optimization theories and methods, etc.). For a correct interpretation of the results should be known and to relate the many variables involved in the process (weather, use and function, the thermal characteristics of materials, energy consumption and costs involved, etc.) and the interdependence between them for optimum architectural design in a given context. This paper presents a detailed review of the application architecture optimization, the different tools available, advantages, disadvantages and final thoughts on current trends and challenges. The current trend considers it essential to integrate the simulation with optimization routines architectural design.
