The aim of this article is to present an analysis of the books that are part of the library of Juan José Fernández Campero de Herrera (1641-1718), the first Marquis of the Tojo Valley, encomendero of Casabindo and Cochinoca, patron of the Church and Collegium of San Miguel Archangel in the town of Tarija, and benefactor of the missions in Chiquitos. The library is considered to have been an important one in the area and the earliest studied in what is now the province of Jujuy in Argentina. Its collection included 235 volumes that have disappeared, in which the texts of pragmatic normative literature predominated, on the one hand, and on the other, specific literature of the Society of Jesus, alongside volumes on history and literature. A study of the Marquis’s probate inventory from 1718 would allow to highlight that it was a fundamental tool to construct the Marquis; spheres of authority and to delve deeper into the network the established by the Marquis with the procurators of the Society of Jesus.
