This article aims to identify the cultural perspectives and national public policies oriented toward the cultural sector during the 19th and 20th centuries in Argentina and Brazil. In this regard, it was recognized that transformations surrounding the concept of culture set the agendas of the countries and maintained a influence on the consolidation and institutionalization of the national cultural policy field. Furthermore, the analysis identified cultural perspectives linked to the Enlightenment and European canons, as well as a gradual transition toward anthropological and multiculturalist perspectives that, in turn, remained marked by periods of economicist character. Finally, it can be affirmed that one paradigm was not completely supplanted by another, since the cultural perspectives and their impact on cultural management in both countries were as intermittent as the governments, cultural projects, and democratic processes that constituted the history of the Southern Cone.
