When a book is held on the hands a physical relation is established between the body of the text and the body of the reader, hence the materiality of the book affects the reading content and modalities that acquire this practice. Under inspiration of contributions from book history and sociology of texts, and from the results of our doctoral research –that deals specifically with self-help literature–, in this article we reflect about the link between: book format, text genre, and reading modes. We conclude that the study of the material side is important as an indication of the different modes of reading appropriation.
