In 2010 Argentina joined the round of censuses with ethnic measurement for Afro-descendants. For more than a century this population was not part of the census records. On the contrary, this population was excluded from the measurements on the basis of technical dificulties or that its number was too low to take into account. This inclusion is of great importance in a country where, at the time of constructing its national identity, alterity and cultural heterogeneity were combated and neutralized. This article examines in historically the presence of the black population in the national censuses of 1869 to 1947 and the reading that the State made of it. It also analyzes the incorporation of the question for the self-recognition for Afrodescendants in the last national census of 2010, its meanings, its scope and the new challenges of that such inclusion represent, especially for sfro organizations. This article argues that statistical visibility is a step towards the political visibility of Afro-descendants, who have capitalized the results of the census to become political actors of the national reality
