This article discuss the presence of pre-Hispanic culture in the creation and propagation of the Constructive Universalism project, by Joaquín Torres García. Our approach focuses mainly on the time when the artist returns to Uruguay, where he proposes an Americanist project, guided by the artistic tradition of pre-Columbian South American cultures. Based on the manuscript Metafísica de la prehistoria indoamericana (1939), written by Torres García, we seek to answer questions that are sometimes misunderstood about the production of an art that, while universal, exalts Amerindian culture and distances itself from Europe.
