Objective: To evaluate the influence of social support networks on the development of psychophysiological disorders associated with retirement. Materials and methods: Design: simple retrospective “ex post facto” design was used. Sample: 300 non-dependent middle class seniors, living in Buenos Aires City and influence areas (Argentina) and who used to have a stable and formal employment before retiring. Instruments: Sociodemographic and retirement questionnaire, Health status questionnaire and Social Resources inventory for the elderly. Results: Those who reported having social support networks with more complete structures or being more satisfied with the support received, manifested less frequently the development of psychophysiological disorders associated with retirement. Also, most of the sample reported no negative changes in their health, and have social networks with complete structures or be satisfied with the support received. Discussion and conclusion: The results provide empirical evidence on the modulating effect of social networks for the coping of stressful situations, and indicate the emergence of a new profile of retirees. It is pointed out the need to continue generating spaces of inclusion for the older adults that favor the development of their social support networks and the construction of alternative roles to address the changes that old age brings.
