Mastitis in dairy ruminants is the result of the colonization of bacterial agents in the mammary tissue. It involves pain associated with tissue injury, an event that affects the productive performance of the animals, and behavioral changes such as a reduction in rumination and activity levels. Likewise, it has been suggested that cows with clinical mastitis may have changes in facial expression, which, together with behavioral indicators, may help recognize acute pain. However, it is not clear whether these indicators can be related to the level of pain perceived and the severity of mastitis. The use of analgesics is suggested to manage the pain that animals perceive. Its use in conjunction with antibiotics helps reduce the evolution time of the disease. For this reason, the objective of this article is to analyze the effect that mastitis pain has on the behavioral response and productive efficiency of dairy ruminants, as well as its relationship with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial therapy.
