This paper analyzes, in the first place, the transformation that occurred in the commerce of the city of Córdoba at the beginning of the 20th century with the setting-up of large department stores, such as “Gath & Chaves” and others. The article proposes that its folding was not due to changes in industrial production. It supports an alternative argument related to an increase and specification of local demand and the position of Córdoba in the national internal market. Secondly, it addresses a selection of public views on consumption in general and especially the female one (press, magazines, literary texts, female behavior manuals, and ecclesiastic discourses, among others). It explores the emergence of a new sensitivity around consumption in the modern sense. The interweaves are related to new ideas such as economic autonomy, catholic moralities, domestic habits, and long-standing social customs.
