Heavy metal contamination in water, such as cadmium, copper and chromium, and arsenic metalloid amongst others, are a national and global concern because of their bioaccumulation and biomagnifications throughout the food chain and the environmental compartments (atmosphere, soil, sediments, oceans, etc). In a joint effort between Senasa and under the development of a doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Natural Science, UBA a method for the determination of heavy metals in water of the Reconquista River and one of its main tributaries, Las Catonas stream (Province of Buenos Aires). The treatment and analysis of the water samples were carried out using modified standard techniques. The optimal analytical range to different measurement was determined and the uncertainty was verified with the analysis of a reference material (NIST). This article presents the results of the measurement of cadmium, arsenic, copper and chromium, in two different seasons. Total and dissolved metal concentration was compared in order to characterize the Reconquista River water quality.
