Fertilización nitrogenada en trigo de la región subhúmeda: eficiencia del uso del agua y nitrógeno

Abstract

El agua y el nitrógeno (N) son típicamente los principales factores de producción del trigo en regiones con limitantes hídricas. Por esto, es de gran importancia incrementar la eficiencia de uso del N (EUN) - cuando se aplican fertilizantes - y la eficiencia del uso del agua (EUA) en ambientes subhúmedos. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron i) analizar la respuesta del trigo a diferentes dosis de N, ii) evaluar la EUNy EUA de la biomasa total aérea (MST) y rendimiento en grano, y iii) predecir estas eficiencias mediante modelos construidos a partir de componentes principales (CP) que expliquen la variabilidad en la producción de MST y rendimiento, durante cinco años en un ambiente subhúmedo. Durante 2008-2012, se realizaron ensayos de fertilización nitrogenada sobre trigo utilizando cuatro dosis (0-25-50-100 kgha-1) aplicadas a la siembra. En madurez fisiológica se midió la MST y el rendimiento de grano, y se calculó la EUN y EUA para ambos parámetros. El análisis de CP se realizó utilizando al N disponible y humedad del suelo, y las diferentes precipitaciones en función de la MST y rendimiento. Se originaron tres CP para cada parámetro, con una explicación total de la varianza de 90% y 96% para MST y rendimiento. Las predicciones de EUN para MST y rendimiento, incorporaron los 3 CP con elevados valores de predicción (R2=0,78-0,81). Sin embargo, los ajustes fueron bajos (R2= 0,38-0,45) parala EUA de MST y grano, excluyendo del modelo al CP influenciado por N disponible. Con alta variabilidad en la disponibilidad de agua la fertilización con N no permitió el incremento significativo dela EUA, demostrando que el factor agua es el más limitante para este ambiente. La utilización de CP como regresoras permitió generar modelos certeros de predicción dela EUN de MST y del rendimiento.

Water and nitrogen (N) are typically the main wheat crop production factors in regions with water constraints. For this reason, it is of great importance to increase the N use efficiency (EUN) -when applying fertilizers- and the water use efficiency (EUA) in sub-humid environments. The objectives of this study were i) to analyze wheat response to different N rates, ii) to evaluate the EUN and EUA of total aboveground biomass (MST) and grain yield, and iii) to predict these efficiencies with models using principal components (CP) related to MST and grain yield as variables for five years in a sub-humid environment. During the 2008-2012 years, nitrogen fertilization trials were conducted in wheat using four rates (0-25-50-100 kg ha-1) applied at sowing. At physiological maturity, MST and grain yield were measured, and EUN and EUA were calculated for both parameters. The CP analysis was performed using available N and soil moisture at planting, and rainfall in function of MST and grain yield. Three CP were made for each parameter, with a full explanation of 90% and 96% of the MST and grain yield total variance. The NUE predictions used three CP with a high fit (R2 = 0.78 - 0.81) for MST and grain yield. However, the EUA predictions of MST and yield were low (R2 = 0.38 to 0.45), excluding from the model the CP highly influenced by the available N. The high variability in water availability did not allow a significant increase in the EUA by N application, showing that water is the most limiting factor in this environment. The use of CP as regressor variables allowed accurate models for EUN prediction of MST and grain yield.
