The Jacobacci Observatory covers the area of influence of the INTA’s Rural Extension Agency of Jacobacci, and is part of the network of Pilot Sites of the Argentine Observatory of Land Degradation and Desertification. It is representative of a vast Patagonian region, with an arid and cold climate, which is affected by a desertification and rural poverty syndrome. The initiative arises from the idea that an observatory is a novel device for addressing the complexity of the problems that led to a chronic stagnation in the rural development of these territories. For this purpose, the observatory gathers socio-economic and biophysical information in order to monitor the rural evolution of the region regarding its natural, social and economic-productive dimensions. Also, it promotes spaces of articulation to reflect on the generated information. This paper presents some results as well as some issues arising from these results.
