Trees constitute a viable element to mitigate environmental pollution in urban ecosystems. Leaf samples of nine species of urban trees of Bahia Blanca – Argentina - were collected to assess their capacity retention of atmospheric settleable particulate matter (SPM). Four sampling points were established park, central square and two residential neighborhoods. The samples were taken during the years 2012 and 2013 in spring, summer and autumn. The methodology to determine the MPS on the surface of the leaves included leaching and gravimetry. No differences between different points (p = 0.45) but between seasons (p <0.05) and between species (p <0.05). The interactions between species-points (p <0.001) and seasons-species (p <0.05) were significant. Conifers concentrated more MPS on its foliage. Pinus halepensis had the highest accumulation of MPS per unit leaf area (0.35 mg cm-²) and Fraxinus americana the lowest (0.07 mg cm-²). In the neighborhoods, foliage recorded higher average deposition MPS (2.34 mg cm-²) than in green areas (park and square, 1.70 mg cm-²). The month with the highest deposition was in January (0.40 mg cm-²). The results provide information to identify the potential of different tree species in urban environmental planning and mitigation strategies of air pollution.
