At the present time, the architecture of museums became a determining factor in order to identify and leave a mark in the urban framework of the cities where they are placed. For this reason, the following paper intends to compare the diverse institutional policies, as well as some distinctive architectural features which delineate a new type of cultural institution in the XXI century. Museums of contemporary art have built their identity differently from Fine Arts museums, but we consider that in time both heritage institutions began to operate under the logics of the contemporary museum concept. For the purpose of this paper, we articulate perspectives supported by the critical approaches applied to museology and architectural studies to deliver a specific vision that states the tension between the standards to fulfil and their actual accomplishment. Furthermore, we use a comparative methodology grounded in two concrete Argentinian contemporary art museums: The Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahía Blanca (MAC) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rosario (MACRo). Ultimately, it is intended to strike a balance between a theoretical general order and specific aspects of the Argentinian museum reality. We believe the architectural methods of the chosen examples, and the reading of the conditions that give an account of the transformations occurred in such venues, can enable an integral view of the museal phenomenon regarding the ways of adjusting to the current precepts.
