The debate regarding the use of concepts such as genocide, war, state terrorism and crime against humanity to study the systematic annihilation of large groups of the population has been taking place for long in legal, academic and political circles. These discussions have had important effects in the apropriation or alienation of past experiences. Considering the Argentine case, this paper seeks to study the ethic and political consequences of the use of several concepts. The article will center on the concept of genocide, its effe:s on the constru:ion of collective identity and the relationship between memory and present through material and symbolic agency.
